Around July, the fields of Canna Farm Van Haaster (or De Groeneweg Nursery) in De Zilk, the Netherlands is coloured in warm earth tones, red, yellow, orange, salmon and pink. On the sandy soils of the Dutch flower bulb district, Alfons and Monique van Haaster grow world class cannas of unrivaled quality. Alfons grew up in a traditional flower bulb nursery family and has been practicing his passion for cannas for over 30 years. He is one of very few growers in the Netherlands who is specialised in cultivating cannas!
The family business W. van Lierop & Zn was founded by Wim van Lierop in 1949. Wim started his own flower bulbs nursery in the Anna Paulownapolder in the province of Noord-Holland, on approximately 5 hectares of land. Nowadays, the company is led by Wim’s son Gerard and the cousins Ron, William, Arjan and Peter. Together with 20 permanent employees, the family grows an exclusive selection of flower bulbs (a.o. tulips, daffodils, alliums, grape hyacinths) on more than 250 hectares of land!
Flower bulb company ‘Maveridge’ in Sint Maarten, the Netherlands specializes in hybridizing and developing beautiful new, stronger and/or improved tulip and narcissus varieties. Their dedicated in-house nursery guarantees a supply of healthy, strong and world class flower bulbs. Part of Maveridge’s mission is to contribute to a better world. From 2017 crops onwards, all flower bulbs are MPS certified, which ensures they are grown, treated and processed with respect for our wonderful nature and environment!
At a young age, Hein Huijg bought 10 kilos of tulip bulbs for 850 Dutch guilders from his savings. After one year, he was able to triple the yield and he kept 20 kilos of his harvest. Hein invested his profit in other tulip bulbs. This was the start of the bulb company 'Huijg Breezand' in Breezand, The Netherlands. Around the end of the eighties, John and Raymond Huijg (see photo) became partners. The company has grown to over 45 hectares of flower bulbs nowadays!
