Astrantia
Astrantias, commonly known as masterwort, bring an intricate, almost jewel-like quality to summer borders. Their distinctive pincushion-like flowerheads are surrounded by papery bracts, creating beautifully detailed blooms in shades of white, soft pink, rose and deep red. Held above attractive, divided foliage on slender stems, Astrantia has a light, airy habit that slips easily between other perennials rather than dominating them. It is especially effective in cottage gardens, woodland-style planting and naturalistic borders, where its flowers add texture and subtle colour from early to midsummer.
