Spruce up any outside space with a colour palette of Heuchera—these colourful and patterned foliage plants are semi-evergreen, so not only do they look great through the summer months, but they also provide that much-needed splash of colour through the rest of the year too. To top it off, they throw out a pretty profusion of delicate flowers for additional summer interest. With a neat, compact habit and growing happily in sun or partial shade, Heuchera are a useful plant for most areas with a rich soil. Choose a selection of vibrant contrasting colours to make a real show of your Heuchera plants, or pop them into gaps at the front of the border. Alternatively, use them as contemporary, low maintenance container plant – either way, these easy-going plants have plenty going for them!
Hybrid Heucheras offer the gardener a tremendous range of foliage colours, especially for shady areas. With various common names, including Alum Root and Coral Bells, Heucheras make low, flattened mounds of foliage. They are excellent for filling in gaps between taller plants. Being semi-evergreen, they provide colour virtually year-round. They spread slowly, so are best in groups of three or more, for maximum impact. Different varieties and colours will create a wonderful patchwork effect. Leaves may be wavy-edged or scalloped, and can be green, chocolate-brown, purple, bronze, pewter grey, apricot, orange or yellow, and are frequently marked with one or more other colours. Tiny white, pink or red summer flowers are a bonus.
