Collection: Cephalanthus bare roots
Cephalanthus, commonly known in the UK as buttonbush, is a quietly charismatic shrub prized for its distinctive summer flowers and strong wildlife value. Native to North America, Cephalanthus has a naturally relaxed, informal character, making it especially well suited to naturalistic planting schemes, damp borders and waterside gardens. In early to midsummer, spherical flower heads appear, each composed of dozens of tiny creamy-white blooms with prominent stamens, giving the effect of soft, architectural pincushions suspended above glossy green foliage. These unusual buttonbush flowers are gently scented and highly attractive to pollinators, adding movement and life to the garden at a time when many shrubs are simply providing greenery.
As the season progresses, Cephalanthus continues to earn its place in the garden. The foliage remains fresh and healthy through summer, often colouring softly in autumn before falling, while the plant’s naturally rounded habit brings structure without stiffness. Buttonbush thrives in moisture-retentive soils and is one of the best shrubs for sites that are seasonally wet, coping happily where others struggle. Cephalanthus works beautifully alongside grasses, irises and other moisture-loving perennials, and feels equally at home in contemporary landscapes or more relaxed, wildlife-friendly gardens. For gardeners seeking something a little different, ornamental yet purposeful, Cephalanthus offers character, resilience and a gentle sense of botanical intrigue.
