Collection: Rosa (rose) bare roots

We all recognise a rose, but we don’t always realise that there are many different types. Estimates vary, but there are around 150 species, and many thousands of Rosa varieties grown worldwide. Also, we often think of the rose as the quintessential English flower – but wild roses are found growing throughout North America, Asia, North Africa and the whole of Europe. Many of our preferred roses came originally from China.

In the past, roses were often considered difficult, because they were prone to pests and diseases, and pruning was thought to be confusing. However, these days roses are being bred with in-built resistance to common problems, and it has even been found that pruning roses is not such a precise requirement as it used to be—some people go over them with a hedge trimmer to save time and effort, and they get just as good a show the following summer.

For smaller gardens, pots and patios, miniature roses may be your first choice. These were first bred, and are really intended for growing outdoors, despite the fact that many garden centres sell them as indoor pot plants. It is always much better to buy a miniature rose destined for outdoor growing.

Miniature roses have a real charm about them, and they bring a little taste of rose growing to those whose garden may be tiny. Equally, however, there is a place for roses in any garden, no matter its size. They are best planted near to a patio or sitting area, where you can appreciate them at close quarters.
