Why is a sunflower called a sunflower? Because it’s yellow? Because it reaches up to the sky? No! It is called 'sun' flower because when the sun rises from the east in the morning this is the way the blooms tend to be facing. During the day, as the sun passes across the sky heading westward, so the sunflower follows it. Therefore, the golden daisy bloom is always facing the sun — wherever it is in the sky. There is a wide range of primarily summer- and autumn-flowering perennials and annuals. Almost without exception, Helianthus blooms are yellow-flowered daisies. They are renowned for their adaptability and durability. They are tough, low-maintenance plants, which makes them perfect for any garden. They’ll grow almost anywhere, but they really don’t like a permanently wet soil, or a position in full shade. Tall perennial Helianthus are just right for the back of the border, while there are several shorter front-of-the-border types, too!
