Curated by Piet Oudolf

Piet Oudolf’s planting style is recognised for the way structure, texture and seasonality work together. This collection brings together perennials selected by Piet Oudolf, chosen for the role they can play within naturalistic planting schemes rather than for flowers alone. Grasses, seedheads, foliage and changing forms all have a part to play, creating borders that build through summer and continue to hold their presence into autumn and winter.

The effect comes from repetition, contrast and allowing plants enough space to settle into one another. Upright forms can rise through softer growth, grasses introduce movement and later-flowering perennials help carry the border forward as the season changes. These Piet Oudolf plants are well suited to layered, informal planting where shape and texture matter as much as colour, and where pollinators and other garden visitors naturally become part of the scene.

You do not need a large landscape to work with the same principles. A smaller UK border can still take cues from Piet Oudolf garden design by repeating a considered selection, mixing different flower and foliage shapes and leaving enough structure to remain after flowering has passed. Start with plants of character, let them establish and allow the planting to become more connected with each season.
