There are as many names for this showy Tigridia flower as there are colour combinations and designs on the blooms. There's peacock flower, tigra (or tiger) flower, jockey cap lily, jaguar flower and Mexican shell flower, just for a start. And none of them get even close to describing the very curious flowers of Tigridia, which have large highly-detailed and patterned centres supported by three large base petals. These artworks, unfortunately, only last for a day, but new blooms will open on its flower spikes for as long as six weeks, starting around midsummer. Tigridia does well planted in containers or among low-growing plants in beds or borders, and are much more impressive if planted in groups. It likes the sun and good drainage.
