Siberian iris

Siberian irises have a lighter, more natural character than many other iris groups, with slender stems carrying elegant flowers above neat fans of narrow, grass-like leaves. Most Iris sibirica varieties bloom in shades of blue, violet, purple or white, although softer pinks and more unusual colour combinations are also available. Siberian iris flowers feel delicate without being fragile, making them especially effective in mixed perennial borders, waterside planting and more naturalistic garden schemes where movement and refinement matter as much as bold colour.

Unlike bearded irises, Siberian iris plants prefer soil that retains some moisture and are especially useful where the ground stays fresh through spring and summer. Once established, these hardy perennials form handsome clumps that return reliably each year, with foliage that continues to give structure after flowering has finished. The upright habit of Siberian irises allow them to slip easily between other perennials without taking over, while the flowers are also attractive to pollinators and can be cut for simple seasonal arrangements.

In UK gardens, Iris sibirica works beautifully where a border needs height without heaviness. Plant several together for a stronger drift, repeat them through a larger scheme for rhythm, or combine them with grasses and moisture-loving perennials for a softer, more layered effect. Their mix of elegant flowers, fresh foliage and dependable perennial growth gives Siberian irises a wonderfully calm presence from spring well into summer.
