Collection: Oriental poppies
There is something irresistible about oriental poppies as their rounded buds unfurl into generous bowls of crinkled petals. Known as Papaver orientale, these perennial poppies bring expressive colour to late spring and early summer borders, from glowing reds and oranges to soft pinks, whites and dusky plum shades. Dark centres and inky markings give many varieties a beautifully defined contrast, while ruffled or fringed petals add another layer of detail. Plant them in groups for a bold moment of colour, or let a softer shade set the mood for a romantic cottage garden border. Each flower feels wonderfully extravagant, yet sits naturally among the relaxed growth of neighbouring perennials.
Oriental poppies are hardy perennials well suited to UK gardens, returning from their fleshy roots each year. Grow Papaver orientale in full sun and well-drained soil, allowing space for the plants to establish. Bare-root poppies can be planted in autumn or spring; water them as they settle in and during dry spells while actively growing. After flowering, the foliage often yellows and dies back as the plants enter summer dormancy. This is a natural resting stage, so plan for later-growing perennials nearby to soften the gap. Remove faded foliage and leave room for fresh growth to emerge. Explore our oriental poppy varieties to find familiar favourites and unusual colours worth making part of your border.
