Hymenocallis produces large quantity of white, green or yellow flowers with six narrow recurved petals spiking outwards and backwards from shallow centre cups. It’s small wonder these oddly-shaped Hymenocallis blooms have earned the title of Spider Lilies – not only do the extended petals give the impression of spidery legs, but the way the plant’s multiple flowers cover the rosettes of strap-shaped leaves also bring up images of arachnids. Plant your Hymenocallis bulbs in rich well-drained soil where they will get full sun. Hymenocallis do also prefer reasonably high humidity levels and warmer climates so keep them out of the cold – perhaps a greenhouse might be a good choice. The plants will grow to between 30 to 60cm (2 and 24 inches) tall.
