Recently reclassified as Hesperantha, the Schizostylis produces extremely pretty and dainty crimson red, pink or white flowers made extra special by the wispy and trailing split style which gave it its name. These tendril-like styles, which link the stigma with the ovary, twist and curve as though they are dancing on top of the bowl-like flowers which appear on the plant’s 25cm spikes. An excellent and long-lasting cut flower, the Schizostylis can flower right through from August till December in milder areas (provided they are in a sunny but sheltered location). In colder areas it’s wise to let your crimson flag lilies winter inside. Hesperantha need fertile and moist soil and mulching could be an advantage.
