A Gaura (Oenothera) rarely stands still. Its slender stems sway with the slightest breeze, carrying small white or pink flowers that seem to hover among the plants around them. Also known as beeblossom or wandflower, Gaura brings a light, almost floating quality to a border. It looks especially lovely woven between fuller perennials, where its airy flowers can soften strong shapes without hiding them. New blooms keep appearing through summer and often into autumn, so the effect changes gently from one week to the next.

For a more natural look, plant several Gaura bare roots through a sunny border rather than placing them all in one tight group. They also sit beautifully alongside ornamental grasses, where the movement of leaves and flowers can be enjoyed together. Compact plants can bring the same effect to a large pot. You may also see Gaura listed under its updated botanical name, Oenothera lindheimeri; both names refer to the beeblossom loved for its long, graceful display.

Choose a sheltered position with well-drained soil, as cold, wet ground is harder on Gaura than a dry spell once it is established. Give young plants water while they settle in, but avoid moving established clumps unnecessarily. In a suitable spot, these often short-lived perennials can give you seasons of delicate colour, bringing a little space and movement to even a richly planted garden.
