The climbing flame lily, gloriosa, can set your summer garden on fire with its array of pendulous flowers with recurved flame-shaped petals that soar skywards like small red and yellow flames from individual dangling fire baskets. As their name suggests, gloriosa flowers are nothing short of gloriously beautiful. These perennials can climb to between 1.2-3m in height using the tendrils at the end of their green flame-shaped leaves, so they will need a trellis. For your gloriosa bulbs, rich but well-drained soil is required as well as full sun. Wear gloves when working with the bulbs or plants as gloriosa is considered toxic if ingested and even working with the stems or leaves can cause irritation.
