Description
Stokesia 'Amethyst' is every bit as precious as its gemstone namesake, only this treasure blooms rather than sparkles. With upright stems that refuse to flop and an abundance of deep purple flowers, this Stokes' aster has been carefully bred to stand out from the crowd. Each bloom is a ruffled burst of violet-lavender radiance, its intricate detail catching the light in a way that’s bound to draw the eye. Compact yet full of energy, Stokesia 'Amethyst' forms a tidy clump of fresh green foliage, from which its jewel-toned flowers rise proudly in summer, bringing both colour and structure to the border.
The real charm of Stokesia 'Amethyst' lies in its reliability. It produces a generous flush of flowers, each one carried confidently on strong stems that withstand the knocks of wind and weather. Whether planted en masse for a dramatic sweep of purple, or tucked into mixed plantings for a touch of intensity, it plays its part with quiet assurance. And when the blooms are gathered into arrangements, they carry their vibrant hue indoors too, making Stokesia 'Amethyst' as versatile as it is striking. It’s a plant that doesn’t just decorate the garden, but elevates it—adding a touch of gemstone glamour to the everyday.
Stokesia is called Stokes' aster in honour of Jonathan Stokes, an 18th-century English botanist who first described this striking perennial.

Useful information
-
Soak your Stokesia 'Amethyst' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Stokes' aster" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
