Collection: Lythrum bare roots

Graceful, vibrant and wonderfully at home beside water, Lythrum brings a relaxed wild beauty to the summer garden. Known as purple loosestrife, this elegant perennial produces upright wands of richly coloured flowers that open gradually along the stems, creating weeks of colour when many borders begin to soften in the heat. Whether planted beside a pond, woven through a naturalistic border, or allowed to mingle with ornamental grasses, Lythrum has a buoyant presence that feels both lively and effortless. Bees and butterflies visit constantly, drawn to the nectar-rich blooms, while the slender stems sway gently in every breeze.

Gardeners value Lythrum not only for its long flowering season but also for its adaptable, easy-going nature. Happiest in moisture-retentive soil and sunny positions, it settles comfortably into borders, rain gardens and waterside plantings where its vertical form provides welcome structure among softer perennials. Once established, purple loosestrife returns reliably each year, often forming generous clumps that grow more impressive with time. The vivid flower spikes also make excellent companions for plants with airy foliage or broad leaves, adding height, rhythm and a pleasing sense of movement. In a thoughtfully designed planting, Lythrum is one of those quietly indispensable perennials that ties everything together.

The name Lythrum comes from the Greek lythron, meaning "blood", a reference to the plant’s rich crimson-purple flowers.
