Description
Soft, buttery golden yellow burnished in a rich, warm red, the flowers of Dahlia 'Irish Pinwheel' manage to be both showy and subtly mellow at the same time. Their many-petalled, double form stands out in a border, yet the gentle, sunset hues act as a brilliant colour blender for bolder reds, oranges, and yellows. At around 10cm across the blooms of Dahlia 'Irish Pinwheel' are on the smaller side for dahlias, meaning they mix particularly easily with other plants.
Dahlia 'Irish Pinwheel' is popular for use in bouquets, so be sure to plant plenty of extras for cutting. Whatever you do, don’t feel guilty—cutting the flowers actually encourages the plant to produce more. By the same token, regular deadheading makes a big difference in the quantity and duration of flowering. Snip off old blooms of Dahlia 'Irish Pinwheel' (which can be distinguished from new buds by their slightly pointed shape) just above the next set of leaves down.
