Colocasia
'Diamond Head'
black elephant ears
Flaunt the finest foliage around with a Colocasia 'Diamond Head'! With huge leaves which can span up to 50cm across (once mature), light-catching silky sheen and crepuscular colouring, it’s a statement piece for sure. Also known as elephant’s ears, those mammoth, leathery, veined leaves which flap in the breeze bring a little bit of safari thrill to your own garden or indoor jungle. 'Diamond Head' is a good Colocasia to grow in sun or very light shade as the leaves react to sunlight and become darker in higher light levels. What’s more, the big heart-shaped leaves reflect light like shimmering faces of cut crystal.
If you’re aiming for an exotic summer planting scheme, including a plant like Colocasia esculenta 'Diamond Head' will make it happen! In summer, transfer it outside and combine with tall, leafy plants with bright blooms like dahlias, cannas and hedychium. This black taro is tropical and needs to bask in warm temperatures, so first enjoy the fascination of watching it unfurl its first leaves as a houseplant and then move it outdoors in summer where it can loom among garden plants in borders or on the patio.
