Description
Bred in Canada, Dahlia 'Ben Huston' is a giant-flowered decorative dahlia with gorgeous, antique colouring. Reaching a whopping 22cm across, its big, double blooms offer a warm, vintage mix of faded salmon and apricot orange. Dahlia 'Ben Huston' makes the most dazzling cut flowers, so be sure to plant extra to allow plenty of spares for the vase.
Any bloom left on the Dahlia 'Ben Huston' plant will eventually wither and begin to set seed. By deadheading these, you will redirect energy away from seed production and back into the formation of new flowers. First, learn to distinguish spent blooms from new buds—spent blooms are pointed and squishy, while new buds are rounded, glossy and firm. Spent flower identified, follow its stem down and snip above the first pair of leaves you meet. Do this regularly and your efforts will be rewarded with many more flowers over a longer period.

Dahlia 'Ben Huston' is half hardy, which means that it should be kept frost free over winter and during spring.
For best results, start your dahlia tubers in temporary pots in a
greenhouse in March or April to grow on to transplant outside later in the season—this will give them a head start.Alternatively, you can plant the Dahlia 'Ben Huston' tubers directly outside in May.
Plant with the stump of last year's stem facing upwards. The tuber should be fully submerged but with the stump just below the soil surface.
Plant one tuber per 8-10" pot if growing on during spring. When
planting outside, space the tubers around 30-50cm apart from each other. Compact varieties don’t need so much space.Water-in thoroughly after planting and continue to water regularly once in full growth, but only when the soil appears to be nearly dry.
