Trollius, otherwise known as globeflowers, are found naturally in moist alpine meadows. Despite this, their versatility is such that, as garden plants, they tolerate a fair amount of shade — even full shade in some cases — and extremely moist soils (although it should be said that they dislike a saturated soil). The original European globeflower (Trollius europaeus) has been used by plant breeders over the years, and now there are many garden varieties. The blooms are spherical (hence the common name), and are carried on wiry stems during late spring and early summer. The leaves are fern-like and deep green. Globeflowers are easy-to-grow perennials that look best in drifts, and are the perfect choice for planting beside a pond or stream — or a boggy part of the garden. As cut-flowers, they make a great addition to bouquets, or in a vase arrangement. And remember, the more you deadhead, the more flowers will be produced!
