Hardy throughout the UK

Oxalis deppei 'Iron Cross' gets its name from the cross pattern on the four velvety leaves that have given the plant various nicknames associated with the Shamrock. It’s been called a False Shamrock and the Good Luck Plant or just Lucky Clovers among others. The oxalis does have similar shaped almost heart-shaped leaves but the cross that circles the centre of the group of leaves is what really makes this plant stand out!

A deep maroon, it turns the leaves of the Oxalis deppei 'Iron Cross' into a very decorative part of the plant. Then add into the equation the dainty five-petalled deep pink flowers that shoot out from the plant on long thin stems and you will realise it was indeed good luck that you discovered this plant.

Botanical name:

Oxalis deppei Iron Cross

Light requirements:

Partial shade / full sun

Soil moisture:

  • Plant your little Oxalis bulbs (technically rhizomes) in late spring or autumn, in a pot or straight out into the garden soil after all risk of frost is over
  • Select an area with moderately fertile, humus-rich soil, that is in full sun or part shade
  • If growing in a pot, use a well-drained soil mix of equal parts loam, leaf mould (or soil-less compost) and grit
  • Set the oxalis bulbs 5cm, and space them 13cm apart
  • Water moderately when in growth and, for best foliage and flowers, apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly between April and September
  • Outdoors, in late autumn the top growth will die back. Pull or cut this away
  • Provide frost-free conditions for the bulbs to remain dormant over winter. During this time the compost should be kept barely moist
  • To freshen the compost, re-pot the bulbs every couple of years (when dormant), using the same pot, or move up to one size bigger
  • Indoors, pots will remain colourful throughout autumn and early winter. At this stage, allow the oxalis plants to dry out and have a period of dormancy before starting them into growth again in spring
