Plant tulip bulbs from October to mid-December, once the weather has cooled. Until then, store them somewhere cool, dry and safely away from mice and squirrels.

'Red Hunter'
When it’s in flower, Tulip 'Red Hunter' will almost certainly be the first plant to catch your eye as you enter the garden. In mid-spring, bright, scarlet-red blooms, each with a black central blotch, are held on short stems. The bases of the plants are surrounded by attractive, upright, narrow, grey-green foliage. This tulip may be short — at just 15-20cm — but what it lacks in height, it more than makes up for in vibrancy!
It is excellent for providing colour on a rockery or at the front of a bed or border. It is best planted in groups for bold flashes of colour. It is also good seen close-up, so is recommended for using in a patio container or pot. Although Tulip 'Red Hunter' will prefer a position in full sun, it is fully tolerant of some shade during the day.
Tulipa linifolia (Batalinii Group) 'Red Hunter' is in the Tulip Group 15 (Miscellaneous). It is considered such a good plant, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) have awarded it a coveted Award of Garden Merit.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Plant bulbs pointed side upwards, 15–20cm deep and around 10cm apart. You can leave a little more space between them in borders.
Water once after planting to settle the soil. Border-grown tulips rarely need further watering, but containers should be kept lightly moist and never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, then allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. This helps the bulbs store energy for the following year.
