Description
Hosta 'Ruffled Mouse Ears' is the latest member of the 'Mouse' series (see also 'Blue Mouse Ears', 'Mighty Mouse' and 'Sun Mouse'). In fact, this is a sport of Hosta 'Blue Mouse Ears'. The common factor with all of these cultivars is that they are tiny! This latest, ruffled form has a height of just 15-23cm and, because of this, it is best grown in a pot, although there is nothing to stop you from planting it out in the garden, if you wish.
The leaves of Hosta 'Ruffled Mouse Ears' are thick and leathery, and nearly round—more the shape of a mouse’s ear, in fact! Colour-wise, they are blue-green in spring; later in the season they become blue-green to green. They all have ruffled edges, with a thin, light margin. They also have a slightly cupped appearance, making them look almost like an alpine succulent!
Finally, light lavender flowers appear in summer, to give the plant yet another exciting dimension. Grow Hosta 'Ruffled Mouse Ears' in sun or shade, in pots (ideal for balconies or terraces) or in patio borders.

Useful information
-
Soak the Hosta 'Ruffled Mouse Ears' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Miniature hosta" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
