Hedychium ellipticum

shaving brush ginger

Make a bold statement with this exotic stunner, Hedychium elipticum – a knockout gorgeous member of the ginger lily family. Whether you have tropical planting schemes or a trendy urban oasis, this lush and leafy delight topped with exquisite plumes of wispy white flowers has all the jungle appeal that you’re looking for. Give Hedychium ellipticum a sheltered spot in a partially shaded border and it will reward you with a showy display of large architectural banana-like leaves!

In addition to the fabulous foliage, you also get a flamboyant display of swirly flowers at the top which last throughout the summer months. What’s more, these almost honeysuckle-like flowers are nectar rich, attracting bees and butterflies. Despite their exotic looks, these Shaving Brush Ginger plants are quite hardy and will survive a typical UK winter out in the ground. All they need to make it through the colder months is a cosy covering of dry mulch around the base to keep the worst of the weather off.
