It’s hard not to fall in love with those large, ruffled, pure white blooms of Gladiolus 'Violet Heart', each blotched with a shock of vibrant purple. It’s flamboyant and impressive, but there’s an essence of natural charm with its colour and pattern which seems to have taken inspiration from its wild relative, Acidanthera (Gladiolus murielae). Closer inspection reveals itself to be the more fun, flashy result of a breeding experiment, which you could perhaps call ‘nature with a twist’!
When it comes to planting partners, this sword lily will fit in with most colours schemes. Try weaving swirls of Gladiolus 'Violet Heart' through a mixed borders where they can work as highlights which lift the overall display. Or, keep it simple and dot them around among all-white flowers to emphasise the purple detailing. Gladioli make spectacular additions to the garden, asking only for a sunny, well-draining spot, and protection from the worst of our winter weather.
