Description
Crocus korolkowii has for a long time been a favourite of alpine and rockery plant collectors and enthusiasts. It has gorgeous bright yellow flowers with thin, dark brown lines on the outer petals. Inside, the stamens are of the same shade of yellow, but the centre of the flower graduates to a deep golden brown. As with all crocus, this is very hardy, and easy-to-grow. Known as the celandine crocus—for it has the same shade of yellow as the wild celandine—this particular crocus is a little different. It’s scented!
Originally from parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Crocus korolkowii is a truly fine crocus. It does best, however, when grown in pots with some protection; it does not mind the cold of winter, but it dislikes the wet soil that is so prevalent in most of the UK (it especially needs to be dry when dormant, during the summer months). We would also advise using a loamy, gritty compost when potting. How and where you decide to grow this small crocus, it will bring plenty of joy after a long and grey winter.
