Description
Agapanthus 'Silver Moon' is a stunningly good dwarf Agapanthus, reaching a top height of just 100cm or so. Its outstanding feature is its stripy green-and-white variegated foliage—this sets it apart from all others. 'Silver Moon' is a deciduous Agapanthus, so the leaves emerge each spring, in an attractive clump. To add to this, pretty trumpet-shaped lavender-blue blooms are held in round heads, and contrast beautifully with the foliage. Each bloom has a delicate darker stripe, and long stamens. Blooms are held throughout the summer months, ensuring the plant makes a lovely addition to a mixed border or patio container.
Agapanthus 'Silver Moon' is a semi-deciduous perennial, originally from South Africa, but it has shown itself to grow perfectly well in the UK, with some protection in colder or exposed areas. It is frost hardy, providing the soil is free-draining, and does not suffer from waterlogging in winter. Agapanthus 'Silver Moon' dies back cleanly at the end of autumn, to re-emerge the following spring.
Agapanthus 'Silver Moon' (='Notfred')s is so highly regarded that the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has awarded it the coveted Award of Garden Merit.
If you like the sound of a lavender haze being a feature in your summer garden, introduce Agapanthus 'Silver Moon' to your planting scheme. There’s an argent tone to this beautiful African lily which is partly due to its unusual variegated blue-green foliage which flaunts white margins. The striking leaves appear in spring and are topped in summer with firework-like flowerheads, formed of pale silvery-mauve florets. This perennial is not only gorgeous but also remarkably effortless—it’s low maintenance, drought tolerant and copes well in high temperatures. Agapanthus 'Silver Moon' is a good one for those suntraps around the garden.
Agapanthus 'Silver Moon' likes to be in a sunny position with free-draining soil and, like most Agapanthus, tends to perform best in a position where space is restricted like pots and narrow borders. This perennial will form a clump which grows larger every year and you can look forward to more flower stems each time. In mild areas, it’s possible to plant Agapanthus 'Silver Moon' in borders and top with mulch over winter. But to avoid risk, in cool climates it’s recommended to grow in pots where not only will it feel snug and perform better over summer, but it can easily be moved under cover for winter.

Useful information

Soak your Agapanthus 'Silver Moon' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Dwarf Agapanthus" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
