Description
Hold on to your hats because it’s a dramatic, stormy scene indeed when Aconitum 'Cloudy' erupts into a cumulus of mauve-blue and white blooms. This sensational monkshood has the familiar stems of Aconitum 'Arendsii', but with the modern twist of captivating bicolour—it’s a refreshing colourway to cool the tones of a hot summer border or to make itself at home among a planting scheme of mellow pastels. Bees and butterflies love the nectar rich flowers of Aconitum 'Cloudy', which is ideal if you’re inviting wildlife to your garden.
Aconitum 'Cloudy' is hardy, easy to grow and beautiful, but it comes with a caution – wear gloves when handling as it can cause skin irritation, and be aware that all parts are toxic if eaten. Once established, this hardy perennial produces multiple tall stems above lush, ferny foliage in mid-summer. Reaching an impressive height of up to 1.2m in favourable conditions, it puts on a fantastic summer show which will return year after year. As the common name suggests, the flowers look a bit like monks’ hoods, although some prefer fairy hats! Aconitum carmichaelii 'Cloudy' hails from the scrublands of Europe and North America and will do best in moist well drained soil in a sunny position or in part shade.

Useful information
-
Soak your Aconitum 'Cloudy' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Monkshood" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
