Eremurus (foxtail lily)

Eremurus are best planted in spring or from late summer into autumn. Autumn planting gives the roots time to settle before winter, while spring planting is also suitable once conditions are workable. Because the fleshy roots can dry out, plant them as soon as practical after receiving them rather than leaving them in storage for long periods.

Set the fleshy roots out horizontally, like the spokes of a wheel, with the central crown positioned just below the soil surface. Handle them carefully because the roots can be brittle. Give each plant plenty of room and choose free-draining soil, as Eremurus resent sitting wet, especially during winter.

Eremurus should be planted relatively shallowly compared with many bulbs. Position the crown just below the soil surface, with the fleshy roots spread out beneath it rather than buried deeply. Planting too deep or allowing water to collect around the crown can make establishment more difficult.

Eremurus are not true bulbs. They are fleshy-rooted herbaceous perennials, usually supplied as a central crown surrounded by long, finger-like roots. Their starfish-like appearance can look unusual, but this is completely normal. The roots should be spread out when planted rather than treated like a rounded flower bulb.

Foxtail lilies usually flower in early to midsummer, with many varieties blooming from around June into July. Their tall flower spikes can rise well above surrounding planting, making them particularly useful for adding height and structure after many spring bulbs have finished.

Height varies considerably by variety. Many Eremurus reach around 1–2m tall, while some can grow up to approximately 2.5–3m in favourable conditions. Their impressive height is one of their main attractions, so give them enough space and consider shelter from strong winds or staking where necessary.

Yes. Many Eremurus are fully hardy in the UK, but they need very good drainage to come through winter successfully. The roots tolerate cold much better than prolonged wet conditions. Young spring growth can also be vulnerable to late frost, so some protection may be useful if cold weather is forecast after shoots have emerged.

Eremurus may fail to flower if they are too young, have been disturbed, are growing in poorly drained soil or have had their emerging growth damaged by frost. They can take time to establish and generally perform best when left undisturbed. They also need winter cold to flower properly, so patience is often important with newly planted roots.

Yes. Eremurus are perennial plants and can return for many years once established. They form clumps gradually and generally prefer not to be moved unnecessarily. Good drainage, plenty of root space and minimal disturbance help them develop into stronger, more impressive plants over time.
