Dutch iris bulbs
Dutch iris bulbs
With upright petals, gracefully falling lower petals and flashes of golden yellow, Dutch irises have a beauty that rewards a closer look. Their slender stems carry richly coloured flowers in shades of blue, purple, white and yellow, alongside intriguing bronze and smoky combinations. Known botanically as Iris × hollandica, these elegant bulbs flower in late spring and early summer, continuing the display as earlier spring flowers begin to fade. Plant Dutch iris bulbs in generous groups through borders, repeat a favourite shade among perennials or set aside a few for cutting. Their distinctive flowers lend themselves beautifully to simple arrangements, bringing a little of the season indoors.
Growing Dutch iris bulbs in UK gardens starts with a sunny position and well-drained soil. Plant in autumn, placing the bulbs around 10–15cm deep and approximately 10cm apart, with their pointed tips facing upwards. They also suit deep containers with drainage holes and a free-draining, peat-free compost. Water after planting and during dry spells while actively growing, avoiding persistently wet conditions. After flowering, remove the spent flower stems but allow the leaves to die back naturally, helping the bulbs store energy for future growth. In suitable conditions, Dutch irises can flower again in subsequent years. Explore our Iris hollandica bulbs to find colours that complement your planting or inspire a fresh combination of your own.
