Eranthis tubers

Few flowers feel more welcome than winter aconites, opening their golden cups while much of the garden is still resting. Eranthis hyemalis flowers from late winter into early spring, each bloom framed by a neat collar of deeply divided green leaves. Growing close to the ground, these hardy tuberous perennials bring bright pools of yellow beneath bare branches and along woodland paths. Plant eranthis tubers with snowdrops for a lovely contrast of gold and white, or weave them among early crocuses for a cheerful start to the growing year. Their flowers also provide food for bees and other pollinators venturing out on milder days, giving these early arrivals a useful place in wildlife-friendly planting.

Often sold as winter aconite bulbs, Eranthis grow from small tubers best planted promptly in autumn. Choose sun or partial shade and humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, they can enjoy the light before the leafy canopy develops. Add leaf mould or well-rotted compost before planting, and water in if the soil is dry. Winter aconites are fully hardy in UK gardens and can gradually naturalise where conditions suit them. Allow their foliage to die back naturally and leave established patches undisturbed, giving seedlings time to develop. With patience, a modest planting can become a much-loved carpet of flowers that marks winter’s gradual turn towards spring.
