Collection: Saxifraga bulbils
Saxifraga bulbils grow into plants with a delicate, old-fashioned charm, bringing finely detailed flowers to borders and containers. Saxifraga granulata, known as meadow saxifrage, includes the lovely double-flowered 'Flore Pleno', also called fair maids of France. Its clusters of white blooms rise above low rosettes of rounded, scalloped leaves, creating an airy display in late spring and early summer. Each flower resembles a tiny rosette of petals, particularly beautiful against fresh green foliage. Plant this double meadow saxifrage beside a path, beneath lightly shading shrubs or in a stone planter where its flowers can be appreciated up close. Small groups give the planting a relaxed, established feel.
Often sold as Saxifraga bulbs, these plants grow from small bulbils: miniature structures that develop into new plants and help established clumps gradually spread. Plant Saxifraga bulbils in autumn, around 2–3cm deep, in well-drained soil in partial or dappled shade. Starting them in pots of peat-free multipurpose compost allows them to establish without competition before moving them into borders. Keep the compost lightly moist while growing, allowing excess water to drain away. Hardy in UK gardens, meadow saxifrage can remain outdoors through winter and is best given time to settle undisturbed. Its foliage may die back during summer dormancy, so mark the planting spot to protect the resting bulbils. These unusual little plants offer a rewarding way to add delicate white flowers to quieter corners.
