Collection: Corydalis tubers
Soft, finely divided foliage and clusters of intricate flowers give Corydalis a charm all of their own. These compact spring-flowering plants fit beautifully into woodland borders, cottage gardens and the spaces beneath deciduous shrubs. Corydalis solida, also known as fumewort or bird-in-a-bush, produces tubular blooms with distinctive backward-pointing spurs, in shades including pink, purple and white. Gather corydalis tubers in groups beside a path to appreciate their detail, or combine them with woodland anemones and miniature daffodils for a relaxed spring display. Their fern-like leaves soften the planting around them, while the flowers introduce a different shape among familiar spring bulbs. They are equally lovely in pots, where their delicate features can be enjoyed close by.
Plant corydalis tubers in autumn, choosing well-drained soil enriched with leaf mould or well-rotted compost. A position in light or dappled shade works well, particularly beneath deciduous plants that let spring light reach the ground. These hardy perennials are well suited to UK gardens and can remain outdoors through winter without frost protection. For containers, use peat-free compost and ensure excess water can drain away freely. Water after planting if conditions are dry, and avoid waterlogged ground. Once established, tuberous Corydalis need little attention: allow the foliage to fade naturally after flowering as the plants enter their summer rest. Plant among later-growing perennials to keep the border interesting as one season gives way to the next.
