Collection: Erythronium bulbs
Erythroniums bring an intimate kind of beauty to the spring garden, with nodding flowers whose petals sweep backwards above broad, often mottled leaves. Commonly known as dog’s tooth violets or fawn lilies, these woodland bulbs offer shades of yellow, creamy white, pink and lilac, depending on the variety. Their delicate appearance invites you to pause and look closer, particularly when planted beside a shaded path or beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. Erythronium bulbs are lovely companions for woodland anemones and other spring flowers, while their patterned foliage adds interest before the blooms open. Plant them in informal groups, allowing space for clumps to develop and become part of the garden’s spring rhythm.
For UK gardens, Erythronium bulbs are an excellent choice for partial or dappled shade, with fertile, humus-rich soil that retains moisture but drains freely. Plant in autumn and avoid leaving the fleshy bulbs in storage, where they can dry out. Incorporating leaf mould or well-rotted compost helps create the woodland conditions they enjoy. Water during dry spells while plants are actively growing, and allow the leaves to fade naturally after flowering. Their summer dormancy makes them useful partners for later-emerging shade plants, which can fill the space as the foliage disappears. Once settled, leave these spring-flowering dog’s tooth violet bulbs undisturbed to establish a display you can look forward to each year.
