Little irises announcing the arrival of spring
Dwarf iris bulbs
Dwarf iris bulbs
Dwarf irises bring remarkable detail to the garden when much of it is still resting. Flowering in late winter and early spring, Iris reticulata and its related hybrids open beautifully patterned blooms just above the soil, with upright petals and delicate falls traced with contrasting markings. Their colours range from rich violet and clear blue to softer, unexpected shades, often highlighted with yellow or white. Plant dwarf iris bulbs beside a path, in a rock garden or in pots by the doorstep, where every flower can be enjoyed up close. Their compact size makes room for a generous display even in a small space, offering plenty to look forward to before the main spring season begins.
Plant Iris reticulata bulbs in autumn, around 8–10cm deep and a similar distance apart, in a sunny position with excellent drainage. These hardy dwarf irises suit UK gardens, but dislike sitting in wet soil, particularly during their summer rest. For containers, choose pots with drainage holes and use a free-draining, peat-free compost. Water during dry spells while the plants are growing, and leave the narrow leaves to develop after flowering before allowing them to die back naturally. This helps replenish the bulbs for future growth, although flowering can vary as they divide into smaller bulbs. Discover dwarf iris varieties with jewel-like colours and intricate patterns that make the earliest flowers feel especially precious.
