Collection: Gladiolus (autumn planting)
Gladiolus corms for autumn planting bring slender flower spikes to the garden in late spring and early summer. This collection includes graceful types such as byzantine gladiolus, whose flowers rise among narrow, sword-shaped leaves. Their lighter, more relaxed appearance suits cottage gardens and informal borders, where groups can weave between developing perennials. Rich magenta flowers introduce a lively note, while white forms offer a softer alternative. Plant these autumn-planting gladioli in repeated clusters to carry colour through a border, or gather them in a substantial patio container. Their elegant stems are also lovely for cutting, adding height and a natural outline to home-grown arrangements.
Often sold as gladiolus bulbs, these plants grow from corms and should be chosen specifically for autumn planting. Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny position, following each variety’s recommended depth and spacing. Good drainage is particularly important through UK winters, as cold, waterlogged soil can damage the corms. Hardy byzantine gladioli can remain in the ground where conditions suit them, gradually forming larger groups. Check individual hardiness guidance when choosing varieties for colder or exposed gardens. Water during dry spells while actively growing, and allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering. Autumn-planted gladiolus offers a rewarding way to connect the spring bulb display with the fuller borders of early summer.
