Collection: Nectaroscordum bulbs

Nectaroscordum is a wonderfully distinctive spring-flowering bulb, producing tall stems topped with loose clusters of nodding, bell-shaped flowers. Each bloom combines subtle shades of cream, dusky pink, green and burgundy, creating an intricate display that rewards a closer look. Also known as Sicilian honey garlic, Nectaroscordum siculum is closely related to ornamental alliums and is sometimes botanically listed as Allium siculum. Its unusual colouring and elegant form bring something refreshingly different to late-spring and early-summer borders.

Nectaroscordum bulbs are particularly effective in naturalistic planting, gravel gardens and mixed perennial borders. Plant them in groups so their tall stems can rise through neighbouring foliage, where the hanging flowers will sway gently above the planting. They combine beautifully with ornamental grasses, hardy geraniums and late-flowering tulips, while their nectar-rich blooms attract bees and other pollinating insects. After flowering, the stems remain decorative as the seed capsules turn upwards, extending the season of interest well into summer.

Plant Nectaroscordum bulbs in autumn in fertile, well-drained soil. These fully hardy bulbs can remain in the ground throughout winter and may gradually naturalise where conditions suit them. Once planted, they require little attention beyond allowing the foliage to turn yellow and die back naturally after flowering. Elegant without being formal and unusual without being difficult to grow, Nectaroscordum makes an inspired choice for gardeners looking beyond the familiar spring bulbs.
