Position the bulbs pointed side upwards and close together, without touching. Leave their necks exposed above the compost or nestle them securely among the pebbles.
Water compost-grown bulbs and allow the excess to drain. For bulbs grown in pebbles, add water to just below their bases so the bulbs remain dry.
Place the container somewhere cool and bright, away from radiators and strong direct sunlight. Paperwhites need no period of chilling or darkness before growing.
Turn the container regularly to encourage straight growth. Support tall stems if needed and move it somewhere slightly cooler once flowering begins to prolong the display.
