Description

Evergreen, generous and quietly indispensable, Viburnum tinus is one of those shrubs that makes a garden feel settled in all seasons. Known as laurustinus, it forms a large, dense and bushy shrub to around 3m tall, with glossy dark green oval leaves that provide a handsome backdrop throughout the year. In late winter and spring, when much of the garden is still deciding whether to get involved, Viburnum tinus produces flattened clusters of small creamy-white flowers, often prettily pink-tinged in bud. The effect is fresh, soft and wonderfully welcome, bringing both colour and fragrance to the colder months.

After flowering, Viburnum tinus continues the display with berries that shift from metallic blue to black, adding another layer of interest for both gardeners and wildlife. Its naturally full habit makes it excellent for evergreen screening, mixed hedging or as a substantial border shrub, where Viburnum tinus offers structure without looking stiff. Plant it in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil, and it will establish into a dependable, low-maintenance presence. Tolerant, attractive and pleasingly unfussy, Viburnum tinus is ideal for adding year-round depth to traditional and contemporary gardens alike. Few shrubs work quite so hard while looking so calmly composed.

Useful information

    • Soak your Viburnum tinus roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.

    • Plant your "Laurustinus" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.

    • Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.

    • Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
