Description
Enjoy a cascade of colour from Saponaria ocymoides, also known as tumbling Ted, every summer for years to come! As the name suggests, this lovely plant likes to tumble, but it does so with ultimate grace. Masses of pink blooms cover its stems which gradually spread until they reach any edge from which they can cascade. Plant tumbling Ted over a retaining wall and let it froth outwards before spilling frivolously over the edge. The simple yet sparkling little rose-pink blooms of Saponaria ocymoides are so eye catching due to their sheer abundance in summer.
Saponaria ocymoides is a vigorous and easy to grow mat-forming perennial which is low-growing and simple to manage. Not only can it cascade but also happily spread to fill a space at the front of a border. This hardy plant will withstand drought once established and is happy in most well drained soil types. With a short stature of up to 15cm but a spread of up to 45cm, it’s a useful and effective ground cover which will require hardly any attention to put on a good show each year.
Saponaria ocymoides, in its rambunctious floral performance, has no need for an encore; its vigorous spread is like a standing ovation that goes on well into summer. And while other garden divas demand high-maintenance relationships, this rock soapwort or tumbling Ted is the cool character sipping a cocktail of sunshine and the occasional rainfall, asking only for the odd compliment to keep its spirits up.
But don't let its delicate blossoms fool you; Saponaria ocymoides is the Houdini of the plant world—it'll escape the boundaries you set faster than you can say "horticultural marvel". Perfect for seducing butterflies and bees, the rock soapwort is basically a garden's live-in DJ, spinning nectar-laden beats that keep the party pollinators buzzing.
So, if you're looking for a groundcover that's both pretty and tenacious—capable of turning a garden into an Eden without the high-maintenance Edenic requirements—Saponaria ocymoides is your botanical wingman. It's the unassuming wingman that whispers into Mother Nature's ear, "Let's turn this drab rockery into a rollicking rave of colour." And she, of course, can't resist.
Due to its ability to produce a foamy lather, rock soapwort or tumbling Ted has been traditionally used as a natural soap and shampoo.

Useful information
-
Soak your Saponaria ocymoides roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Tumbling Ted" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
