Description
Salvia 'Violette de Loire' is a compact sage with a wonderfully rich colour and a pleasingly long performance. From late spring to late autumn, it produces deep violet-purple lipped flowers, neatly set off by dark purple calyces for extra depth. The effect is elegant rather than flashy, although Salvia 'Violette de Loire' certainly knows how to hold attention. Its fresh green foliage is aromatic, with a lovely blackcurrant scent when brushed, adding another layer of charm to a sunny border or patio pot.
Reaching around 60cm in height and spread, Salvia 'Violette de Loire' is easy to place among perennials, grasses and other sun-loving plants. It thrives in full sun, preferably in a sheltered position, with freely draining, moderately fertile soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and pleasingly low maintenance, which is always welcome in a plant that flowers so generously. Bees and other pollinators are drawn to its nectar-rich blooms, making Salvia 'Violette de Loire' a beautiful choice for wildlife-friendly planting. Pair Salvia × jamensis 'Violette de Loire' with lavender, gaura, nepeta or silver foliage for a relaxed, Mediterranean feel.

Useful information
-
Soak the Salvia 'Violette de Loire' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Sage" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost within a week of delivery and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
