Description
Salvia 'Crystal Blue' is one of those perennials that earns its place by being both graceful and quietly hard-working. Forming a neat, branching clump of softly hairy, rough-textured foliage in shades of deep green to grey-green, it brings lovely structure long before the flowers arrive. Then, from summer into autumn, Salvia 'Crystal Blue' lifts the whole scene with tightly packed spires of clear, sky-blue blooms that seem to catch every scrap of light. There is a familiar elegance here for admirers of Salvia 'Caradonna', but Salvia 'Crystal Blue' has a fresher, cooler mood. Less drama, perhaps, but every bit as sophisticated. It slips beautifully into naturalistic borders, cottage-style planting and more pared-back schemes where colour needs to feel considered rather than loud.
What makes Salvia 'Crystal Blue' especially useful is its gift for harmony. The flower colour threads effortlessly through richer purples, plummy tones, most pinks and silvery foliage, making it wonderfully easy to place. Use Salvia 'Crystal Blue' to soften darker planting combinations or repeat it through a border for a calm, luminous rhythm. Pollinators will appreciate it too, visiting the flowers over many weeks while the upright stems keep everything looking fresh and composed. Even when planted among bolder companions, Salvia 'Crystal Blue' never gets lost; instead, it provides that rare balancing note that makes a planting sing. Reliable, decorative and pleasingly unfussy, Salvia nemorosa 'Crystal Blue' is a very modern sort of sage. Beautiful without trying too hard, which is usually the best sort.
Salvia comes from the Latin for to heal. Many sages were once valued as much in the apothecary as the border.

Useful information
-
Soak your Salvia 'Crystal Blue' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting.
Plant your "Balkan clary" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors.
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed.
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
