Description
Phlomis 'Amazone' is a wonderfully architectural perennial, bringing height, poise and a touch of the unexpected to sunny borders. Known as sage-leaf mullein, it forms a handsome clump of large, fresh green leaves, above which rise dark purple stems in early to midsummer. These striking stems carry neat whorls of hooded lilac-pink flowers, arranged in tiers as though designed by someone with an excellent eye for structure. Phlomis 'Amazone' has been recognised with an RHS Award of Garden Merit, and it is easy to see why: it is elegant without being precious, distinctive without shouting, and dependable in a well-drained spot.
Perfect for naturalistic planting, gravel gardens or mixed herbaceous borders, Phlomis 'Amazone' combines beautifully with ornamental grasses, salvias, nepeta and airy late-season perennials. The flowers are loved in summer, but the display does not simply fade away once the petals pass. Instead, the whorled seedheads remain on the upright stems, creating sculptural silhouettes through autumn and winter, especially handsome when caught by frost. Leave Phlomis 'Amazone' standing for as long as you can bear, then cut back in late winter before fresh growth begins. With its bold foliage, dark stems and long-lasting form, Phlomis tuberosa 'Amazone' is a plant with excellent manners and rather fabulous bone structure.

Useful information
-
Soak the Phlomis 'Amazone' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Sage-leaf mullein" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost within a week of delivery and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
