Description
The queen of the shade, Liriope 'Royal Purple', is an incredible plant for so many reasons. Firstly, it’s evergreen so it will provide interest and, as its tufted grass-like clumps gradually spread out, ground cover all year round. Then, there’s the bobbly flowers on wand-like spires – a deep velvety purple shade which you can look forward to seeing in autumn every year. The bees and other pollinators love these blooms, which is yet another string to its bow. And, usefully, Liriope 'Royal Purple' thrives in shade, even dry shade conditions. If you have an area of bare soil where nothing really seems to survive, this strong and resilient perennial may stand a better chance.
Growing to approximately 30cm high when mature, Liriope 'Royal Purple' is compact and easy to manage. It spreads, which is useful if you have a good gap for it, but it’s also not difficult to dig out clumps of it if you want to relocate any congested or over-reaching offspring to another part of the garden. Also known as lilyturf, it looks marvellously majestic in a shady location surrounded by other shade-loving subjects including variegated hostas, feathery ferns and epimediums. Liriope 'Royal Purple' prefers a light, free-draining soil but can also cope in clay. Before planting a bare root into tricky growing conditions, give it a gentle start to begin with in a temporary pot with compost and grow it on for a few months first. It’s worth it when you see it settling into its new spot, a little more established in growth, with ease.
Flowering freely from August to November, Liriope 'Royal Purple' will be a headliner in your garden at that time. Once the wonderful wands of flowers have passed, it works as a leafy ground cover, also effectively supressing weeds. Try it in woodland areas or shady borders.

Useful information
-
Soak the Liriope 'Royal Purple' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Lilyturf" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
