Description
Digitalis 'Lucas' is a neatly composed foxglove with a pleasingly upright habit, bringing height, colour and a touch of old-fashioned romance without overwhelming the border. Forming tidy clumps of dark green, wrinkled leaves with softly toothed edges, it has an attractive presence even before the flowers arrive. From early summer into autumn, Digitalis 'Lucas' produces elegant stems lined with tubular pink blooms, each one opening to reveal a pale, speckled throat. The effect is graceful rather than shouty, making Digitalis 'Lucas' especially useful in cottage-style schemes, wildlife gardens and mixed perennial plantings.
Plant Digitalis 'Lucas' in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, where it will settle easily among hardy geraniums, astrantias, grasses and other relaxed border companions. Its vertical flower spikes give structure to softer planting, while the nectar-rich blooms are a welcome invitation to bees and other pollinators. As a semi-evergreen biennial, Digitalis 'Lucas' offers a generous season of interest, with flowers that feel fresh, romantic and quietly distinctive. Soak the Digitalis 'Lucas' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "Foxglove" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost within a week of delivery and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
