Description

Have a wonderful day, every day through summer with Dahlia 'Zippity Do Da'! This undeniably cheerful pompom dahlia mixes that playfulness with a simple carefree attitude, producing delightful pops of flowers, each perfectly-placed lilac-pink petal defined by n ombre to white. These dainty pompons are just 5-6cm across, yet are produced in great profusion and over many weeks from summer through to the first frosts. And who wouldn’t be happy with up to three months of Dahlia 'Zippity Do Da'? My-oh-my!

Dahlia 'Zippity Do Da' makes a sturdy and upright plant, about 75cm in height, ideal for the mid-tier of flower borders, and not too tall for a decent-sized container, so you can grow it on patios, terraces or balconies. It’s also great as a cut flower, having the typical pompom dahlia’s excellent staying power and resistance to fading. All dahlias thrive on a regime of good watering and feeding, enjoying a rich soil and a dose of sunshine.

'Zippity Do Da' dahlias perform brilliantly as garden plants, producing colour in the height of summer through to the fading days of autumn, when we value it most. Though they are not hardy, their tubers can either be stored over-winter to protect them from frosts, or in milder climates left outside covered in a good, thick mulch. With this treatment, they can be enjoyed for years to come.

Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah is a catchy song from Disney's 1946 film Song of the South. Its cheerful melody won an Oscar, becoming synonymous with carefree, sunny days, and timeless Disney charm.

Useful information

    • Dahlia 'Zippity Do Da' is half hardy, which means that it should be kept frost free over winter and during spring.

    • For best results, start your dahlia tubers in temporary pots in a
greenhouse in March or April to grow on to transplant outside later in the season—this will give them a head start.

    • Alternatively, you can plant the Dahlia 'Zippity Do Da' tubers directly outside in May.

    • Plant with the stump of last year's stem facing upwards. The tuber should be fully submerged but with the stump just below the soil surface.

    • Plant one tuber per 8-10" pot if growing on during spring. When
planting outside, space the tubers around 30-50cm apart from each other. Compact varieties don’t need so much space.

    • Water-in thoroughly after planting and continue to water regularly once in full growth, but only when the soil appears to be nearly dry.

Dahlias in 60 seconds

Dahlias like full sun and a free-draining soil, and should be lifted and stored in winter, or at least protected with peat or straw. Dahlia flowers can range from 5 to 25cm in diameter and those magnificent larger-flowering dahlias might appreciate a little extra support with canes!
