Description
Most alliums—or ornamental onions—flower in late spring and early summer. If you want to prolong your allium season, then choose Allium 'Ping Pong', which will be looking its best between June and August. It is an unusual allium (also sometimes referred to as wild leek). Its flowerhead resembles a garlic seed head, revealing a tightly packed silvery pink ball of tiny star flowers. These stand atop tall, strong, straight, deep green stems, and a clump of basal, strap-shaped leaves. With flowers at around 100cm high off the ground, Allium 'Ping Pong' is ideal for the midway point or back of the border.
The flowers of Allium ampeloprasum 'Ping Pong' are extremely attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, making the plant a wonderful addition to a wildlife garden. Then, after the flowers have faded, you can enjoy the architectural seed heads, which create a spectacular display over several months. Or, of you fancy some indoor decoration, cut flowers for the vase; you will be able to enjoy the seedheads this way, too.
