Collection: Sedum
Sedums, commonly known as stonecrop, are among the most useful perennials for dry, sunny planting. Their fleshy foliage stores moisture and gives the plants a distinctive, substantial look, while flat-topped flower clusters add colour from late summer into autumn in shades of pink, red, cream and soft green. Taller forms bring structure to mixed borders, while lower-growing stonecrops are well suited to gravel gardens, edging and containers, making Sedum an unusually versatile group for both traditional and contemporary planting.
What makes Sedum perennials especially valuable is how well they carry the garden beyond midsummer. The flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators, often becoming a focal point when many earlier plants are starting to fade. As the season moves on, the flowerheads can be left in place to dry naturally, adding shape and texture through autumn and into winter. Their tolerance of poor, free-draining soils also makes them a strong choice for low-maintenance and drought-tolerant planting schemes.
From upright stonecrop plants with broad flowerheads to compact forms that hug the ground, Sedum offers a wide range of shapes and uses for UK gardens. Plant taller varieties among ornamental grasses and late-flowering perennials, or use smaller forms where tough, sun-loving plants are needed close to paths, pots or gravel. Their combination of succulent foliage, reliable flowering and excellent wildlife value gives Sedum a long season of interest with very little fuss.
