Description

If you have a wooded or shady border and you want to plant something of interest, with perhaps bright, white flowers, and maybe even a delicious fragrance well, look no further. Smilacina racemosa, also known as False Solomon's-seal, produces a clump of large, shiny, bright green and lush, pleated leaves, and feathery spikes of creamy-white, starry flowers between May and July. These flowers are exceptionally fragrant – making the plant most unlike anything else you will find in the Asparagus family! Individually, the flowers are tiny, but they come in their masses, in tight clusters at the ends of each stem. After the flowers fade, green berries are formed, and by late summer and autumn these will have turned bright red, with tiny purple spots!

A native plant to North America, Smilacina racemosa is hardy throughout the British Isles and, being related to our own lily-of-the-valley, this plant spreads very slowly by cylindrical rhizomes.

Smilacina racemosa (syn. Maianthemum racemosum) is so highly regarded that the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) have given it the coveted Award of Garden Merit.

Useful information

    • Soak the Smilacina racemosa roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting

    • Plant your "False Solomon's-seal" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors

    • Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).

    • Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
