Is it fair to say Lupinus 'Melody' has it all?! We think so. Combining dusky violet tones with the merest blush of pink, the flowers of this cottage garden favourite reach just 60cm in height (pretty dinky as lupins go), making Lupin 'Melody' particularly well-suited to life in a container, or dazzling towards the front of a border. Try pairing with soft pinks and creams for a dreamy display. Think Peony 'Sarah Bernhardt' and Lupinus 'Cashmere Cream'. Perfection!
To bulk up your lupin collection, why not try taking cuttings? It’s spectacularly easy—simply snip a few new shoots in spring when they're around 8cm tall and tuck them into a pot filled with gritty compost. Give them plenty of light, warmth, and regular misting, and before long you should see roots peeping through the holes at the bottom of the pot. Put into individual pots and after a couple of weeks your Lupinus 'Melody' cuttings should be ready to plant outside. Easy!

Soak the Lupinus 'Melody' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
